Gas mileage becomes priority one for car buyers

The majority of those surveyed also favor a government push for higher mileage standards and funding for alternative fuel research. Many analysts hadn't expected consumer behavior to change significantly until gas hit $4/gallon, but at the time of the study's release, the national average was only $3.27.
